Difference between Bien and Buen
Bien is an adverb that describes a verb. Bien is similar to “well” in English.
Buen is an adjective that always goes before a singular masculine noun. Buen is similar to “good” in English. Buen agrees to the gender of the noun: feminine, masculine, singular or plural. Buenos could go before and after plural masculine nouns. Bueno goes after the verb describing a singular masculine noun. Buena and Buenas can be used before and after feminine nouns.
In summary:
- Bien= «well»
- Buen, bueno, buena, buenos, buenas = good
Here are some examples:
- Peter habla español muy BIEN. / Peter speaks Spanish very WELL.
- Él es un BUEN amigo. / He is a GOOD friend.
- Ayer vimos una BUENA película. / Yesterday, we watched a GOOD movie.
- Este músico toca muy BIEN. / This musician plays very WELL.
- Somos BUENOS amigos. / We are GOOD friends.
- Recibí BUENAS noticias. / I received GOOD news.
- Está muy BUENO. / It’s very GOOD. (note: asuming that It is a singular masculine noun)
