There are many short phrases in Spanish that can help you express your needs and feelings without studying any grammar. Let’s learn the most popular.

Mi casa es su casa: literally means «my house is your house», however is a common Spanish expression used in English, meaning «welcome» or «make yourself at home”.

¿Qué onda?: it’s an idiom used to ask how are you?, it is similar to the used to “What’s up?” in English.

¿Qué padre?: it is a very useful expression  that means “Cool!”

¡Arriba, Arriba!: it was very popular during the 80’s and 90’s due to a cartoon called “Speedy Gonzalez” and it is an expression to motivate like “move, move”

¡Lo siento!: this expression is used to say I’m sorry.

¡Gusto en conocerle!, ¡gusto en conocerlo!,  ¡gusto en conocerla!, ¡gusto en conocerte! y ¡mucho gusto!: all of these phrases means “nice to meet” you but they have a different degree of formality.  

  • ¡gusto en conocerle!: very formal
  • ¡gusto en conocerlo!: formal for a man
  • ¡gusto en conocerla!: formal for a woman
  • ¡gusto en conocerte!: formal with the same social status or hierarchy
  • ¡mucho gusto!: general nice to meet you

!Hasta la vista!: it literally means “see you”
